AI-Empowered SAFe Release Train Engineer
SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE) certification training for leading Agile Release Trains, with AI woven into PI Planning prep, dependency tracking, and program reporting.
Who This Is For
Program Managers and Agile Coaches currently overseeing multiple teams who want to move into the RTE role, along with Solution Train Engineers and Project Managers transitioning to Lean-Agile delivery. This is an Advanced-level course — you should already have SAFe grounding (SAFe Agilist or Scrum Master material) before attending.
What You'll Cover
Exploring the RTE Role
RTE characteristics and responsibilities, and how the role fits into SAFe's foundations.
Applying SAFe Principles
Preparing and facilitating Program Increment (PI) Planning, including multi-location facilitation.
Executing the PI
Running ART events, optimizing and measuring flow, the IP Iteration, and the Inspect & Adapt event.
Serving the ART
Key ART roles, Release on Demand, systems thinking and value stream mapping, and building a one-team culture.
Course Details
In SAFe's own framework, the Release Train Engineer is a servant leader and Agile Release Train (ART) coach — facilitating ART events and processes, resolving impediments and risk, driving continuous improvement, and coordinating with Product Management, System Architects, and Business Owners to keep the train moving.
This is Scaled Agile's current course revision, which added a dedicated lesson on using AI inside the RTE role — generating role-specific templates, automating dependency mapping, flow analysis and risk prediction, and using Scaled Agile's own SAFe CoPilot assistant for framework guidance, while keeping human judgment over anything AI generates. Scaled Agile has confirmed this AI content is part of the curriculum but not yet part of the certification exam.
The certification exam is 60 multiple-choice questions with a 120-minute time limit, closed-book. Your first attempt is included and must be taken within 60 days of course completion; retakes are $50 with a short waiting period between attempts. Certification renews annually and includes access to SAFe's community resources, framework articles, a shareable digital badge, and PMI PDU / Scrum CEU eligibility.
What You'll Learn
- Lead large-scale PI Planning events with confidence and align every team on the train around a shared mission.
- Coach teams and leaders in Lean-Agile mindsets to remove obstacles and support relentless improvement.
- Identify and eliminate waste in the delivery pipeline using Kanban and flow metrics.
- Manage risk and escalate systemic impediments before they stall the train.
Prerequisites
Prior exposure to SAFe — typically through Leading SAFe or a SAFe Scrum Master course — plus experience working with or leading Agile teams.
